Bourne youngsters, Evie Martin-Cuthbertson (7) of Holloway Avenue, Bourne and Eleanor Waldock (9) of Elizabeth Way, Thurlby were the official winners of Holiday on Ice ‘Ice Factor’ Competition that attracted 21 young skaters from as far afield as Norwich, Slough and Baskingstoke, and was held at Peterborough Ice Skating Arena on Wednesday 2nd November.
The pair performed a 1½ minute routine in front a panel of judges that included Robin Cousins MBE and Lauren Taylor, a professional ice skater and semi-principal in Holiday on Ice’s new show Tropicana – the Passion Tour. Their prize is to perform their own choreographed routine on the opening night at Peterborough in front of thousands.
Evie’s mum, Kelly, told us, “We just couldn’t believe it when they won. The girls only started working on their programme a week before the competition and being so young, I think they just went out and enjoyed themselves. They work so well as a team and help each other when they practice. I’m so proud and pleased for them.” Sara, Eleanor’s mum agreed, “Credit really has to been given to the girl’s skating coach, Kate Locks, who helped with the choreography and gave them the encouragement and confidence to enter the competition. We are so lucky to have such excellent skating coaches at Peterborough.”
Evie, who attends Westfield Primary School in Bourne, said, “The best thing was when I got my certificate.” Eleanor, who is a pupil at Thurlby Community Primary School told us about the moment she heard they had won, “I was expecting one of the other skaters to win, because she was so good, then I heard our names being called out.”
Commenting on the event, Robin Cousins told us, “There was a huge amount of talent taking part. Several of the skaters were good enough to have the potential to join a professional skating show like Holiday on Ice when they’re older. Eleanor and Evie's performance stood out; their performance was charming, brilliantly in sync and their skating skills really advanced at such a young age. We are really looking forward to seeing what they come up with for opening night. I encourage Peterborough audiences to come along and support them on 2nd February at the opening night of the show.”
Evie and Eleanor have now been invited to perform at the opening night of TROPICANA – The Passion Tour. The show will delight audiences drawn from across the East of England region at the EXEC Peterborough, East of England Showground in 8 shows from 2nd-5th February 2012. Created and choreographed by Robin Cousins, and featuring interpretations of some of the best loved songs from world-renowned songwriter Barry Manilow, the show takes you on a journey that celebrates love, life, music and dance in one of the most thrilling ice spectaculars you will ever see.
